Who is Nuff Stylz?

Answer: The hip-hop scratch master turntablist, who founded the entity other wise known as the NUF STYL SOUND or D NUF STYL MOVEMENT

Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & Crew have been pumping out mixed tapes & remixing tracks more then 25 years now! The NUF STYL SOUND CREW introduced the DUBPLATE to the Toronto Soca DJ scene.

AMAZING ISNT IT? - THATS HISTORY!

Before Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, no other Soca dj had or ever heard about the dubplate special!! In 1995 they started a dubplate studio in Toronto, cutting dubs for dj’s and artists all around the world!!

Consistently being ranked the #1 djs in that time era, there was no need to compete. Because of this edge, Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, assisted other dj’s who seek this celebrity stator.

Back in the day, there was a lot you needed to know & do, before you would ever be considered a “big dj superstar”. Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, tried to encourage young dj’s into this growing market. While most other big name dj's were battling or sound clashes, Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, took the other route and try to assist up & coming djs. Immediately they noticed something else? That helping other djs was much more profitable then competing with them!!

What did Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW do?

Just to mention a few things...

- Circulating pre-release vinyl tracks (you couldn’t download music back then)
- providing sound systems
- cutting dubplates or specials
- producing commercials
- remixing tracks for artists
- remixing tracks for dj's for their mixed tapes
- remixing tracks for dj's to spin in the clubs

This all demanded a lot of time & in return generated alot of money too! (more income then they would ever make spinning in the clubs!)
So in 1997, they stop playing clubs all together and founded another venture - the MUSICAL REVIEWS magazine.

MUSICAL REVIEWS MAGAZINE

The MUSICAL REVIEWS MAGAZINE catered purely to dj’s, artists and HARDCORE music lovers. This magazine contained articles reviewing studio gear, dj equipment & much more. The main attraction was the monthly charts.

Why the Popularity?

In that time era, Canadian TV, Magazine, and radio, didn't air much HIP-HOP & R&b. So while other magazines focus on mainstream music of that era (rock, country, etc) The MUSICAL REVIEWS focused entirely on UNDERGROUND MUSIC which rarely (or never) got radio play, but were big club bangers.

When Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, played the clubs, most of their biggest fans were other djs. From talking to other djs they release something - Most djs don’t get regular gigs!!

So if you were one of these dj’s who played out, once every 2 or 3 months, you wouldn’t really know what tracks were “big” in the clubs! (well, unless you personally went to every club yourself). Back then, you couldn’t really trust the radio; they didn’t play our music. If they did air a club banger on the radio, that meant only one thing. The song must be so “played out” in the club scene, that if you were a dj still playing it, you would get “diss’ed”.

SO WHERE WOULD YOU FIND OUT WHAT TRACKS ARE HOT?

Back then mixed tapes was one of the main sources. Underground radio stations helped but mixed tapes would reach much larger masses. Unfortunately their were too many problems related to the Canadian "mixed tape" scene (for those of you who remember), besides that, top dj’s didnt have time to put out mixed tapes every month. The internet didn’t exist yet, so where could you go?

Answer: MUSICAL REVIEWS CHARTS - Here’s a void where the MUSICAL REVIEWS filled.

The musical reviews compiled a non-basis account of what clubs dj’s were actually playing in the clubs. The compilation was publication monthly. Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, hand picked a few top clubs dj’s, who complied the charts each month. The styles of music the musical reviews focus on were HIP-HOP, R&B, HOUSE, REGGAE, SOCA and even CHUTNEY MUSIC .

THAT WAS THEN…WHAT ABOUT NOW??

With the popularity of the internet & the ease of downloading music for FREE, the art or mixing is not the same. The new school dj's have computers that can practically do it all & with very little skill needed. Today, Dj’s can find just about any kind of online assistance for free.

In December 2005, the musical reviews published its last issue. Although no one wanted it to end, (especially the massive dj subscribers) however after a long 9 year run - its time had come. The internet is more prevalent now then ever, & dealing with the declining economy, Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, had to focus on their other profitable ventures, which demanded so much of their time.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW?

Nuff Stylz (aka nuffstylz) & the NUF STYL SOUND CREW, has been involved with other investment ventures, which has keep them out of the spotlight. However, they are still currently active in music scene & are planning to return to Toronto for a big re-launch with some new crew members in 2010.
